Junior Varsity Needs Our Support
I have noticed over the past two years the lack of support that Junior Varsity (JV) teams receive in my area. I have attended both football and basketball high school games only to see that the JV receives very little moral support. While the Varsity games are usually standing room only. There have been times when JV and Varsity play on the same day at the same arena. The JV team will average if lucky (thirty viewers), while the Varsity teams packs the house. To make matters worse, the spectators coming to the view Varsity arrive at the end of the JV game. It has to be quite disappointing for the members of JV to look in the bleachers and see the crowd arriving at the end of their game. I am not a sports fan, but I do have a nephew who plays both basketball and football. I am also legally blind, so I am not able to see the plays or know which kid on the field or court is my nephew. Nonetheless, I am there to support him and his players and boost their morale by cheering from the stands.
I really wish more people would see the JV games as important. It is not good for our boys’ morale to look out in the stands and see a handful of people. I do not know if this situation occurs at other high schools throughout the US, but here in Elkhart, Indiana it is a sad truth. |
